The New Zealand Thirumurugan Temple, is a Hindu temple situated at 145, Church Street, Otahuhu, Auckland. The main deity in this temple is Lord Muruga, the same as the Karatagama Theyo.
The origin of this temple was in Ellerslie in 2001 and as the patronage grew the current larger premises was bought and the temple commenced poojas from 8 June 2014.
The devotees of this temple hail from Sri Lanka, India, Malaysia, Singapore, South Africa and many other countries. The resident priests officiate the daily morning and evening poojas and many major events that are celebrated throughout the year. The most important festival of the temple calendar is the 10-day event called “Mahothsavam” which takes place towards the end of January each year. Each day of this festival are generally attended by about 800 – 1000 devotees. Dinner is served at the end of each day.
During the lockdown period, all poojas were celebrated by our resident priests. This gave rise to our temple’s Facebook livestreaming offering which now has over 4,500 followers from all over the world.
On the 8th July 2023, Saturday, the Thirumurugan temple is officiating a large pooja called – RUDRA HOMAM. All are invited to attend this important and auspicious event. Time 8 am – 12pm.
