On the magical evening of December 7th, 2024, the Sri Lanka Friendship Society Waikato (SLFSW) brought the spirit of Christmas alive through the joyous event, Christmas of Love – Senehase Naththala. This festive celebration radiated warmth, unity, and the true essence of the season.

The evening began with the singing of the national anthems of Sri Lanka and New Zealand, a heartfelt tribute to the multicultural ties that bind our community. The Vice President of SLFSW delivered a welcome speech, weaving a narrative of the evolution of Christmas over 2000 years. She eloquently connected the story of Jesus Christ’s birth to the histories of Sri Lanka and New Zealand, highlighting the cultural exchange that has enriched Christmas traditions. Her reflections on how the festive season fosters harmony and humanity resonated deeply with the audience.

The celebration featured enchanting performances by children of all ages. The youngest group, aged below 8 years, delighted the audience with a vibrant dance choreographed by Ashika Perera. This was followed by an energetic performance by the 12-plus age group to the iconic Christmas song Seethale Tharu Dilena Madiyame by Bhathiya and Santhush, choreographed by Malsha Madhuwanthi. Children aged 8 to 12 years brought joy to the stage with their lively dance about Santa Claus, choreographed by Maduwanthi Rajakaruna

Reverend Fr. Darren McFarlane from Hamilton diocese and Ven. Dunuvila Metteyya from Hamilton Vihara graced the event with their uplifting speeches, emphasizing the universal message of love and peace that Christmas embodies.

The harmonious adult carol singing of three favourite Sri Lankan carols added a nostalgic touch, while the beautifully choreographed nativity play, performed by children aged 5 to 16  choreographed by Imali Ilanco, recaptured the sacred story of Christmas. The arrival of Santa Claus marked the pinnacle of excitement, as children eagerly received gifts, their faces alight with wonder.

The President of SLFSW proudly introduced the dedicated committee members, whose efforts brought this event to life and she also emphasized the importance of becoming an SLFS member highlighting how the society provides a platform to showcase and celebrate Sri Lankan heritage within the New Zealand Community. The Secretary of SLFSW concluded the evening with a heartfelt vote of thanks, acknowledging the collective spirit of everyone involved.

Event compered by children aged 12-18 showcasing their broadcasting talents under the supervision of Roshan Perera. Buffet dinner served while the community engaged in friendly conversation with friends and families.

Christmas of Love – Senehase Naththala 2024 was not just an event but a celebration of love, togetherness, and the shared joy of Christmas, making it a night to cherish for all who attended.
