The age-old friendly rivalry between the two proud schools in Sri Lanka Ananda College and Nalanda College – which was brought to New Zealand 2 years ago, boys are ready for the 3rd edition of “Battle of the Maroons” in NZ which will be played at Ellerslie Cricket Club grounds (46 Michaels Avenue, Ellerslie) on 24th January 2021. Game starts at 10.30am.
Bragging rights are on the line this year as first two games were split- Ananda won the inaugural encounter but Nalanda came back strongly to win the 2nd encounter.
Ananda College will be led by @Rangana Jayawardena this year, while the boys from Nalanda will battle it out under the captaincy of @Pubudu Nuwan.
This year the organising committee has decided to get involved in a worthwhile community project and it is with a great privilege to announce that we are teaming up with legendary Sri Lankan cricketer Mr. @Rohan Mahanama to donate the winner’s prize money of $1000 NZD to the @SOS Children’s Villages Sri Lanka.
SOS Children’s Villages creates loving family like care environment for children who has lost parental care in 136 countries including Sri Lanka. At present, the organisation ensures the wellbeing of 860 children and alleviated 3,200 low-income families in different parts of the country. It is a great honour to participate in this great initiative and both teams are getting rightly behind with the project.

Both the encounters so far have lived up to its hype where both teams fought hard on the field but played in good spirit and this year will be no different. We were delighted and honoured to have a such a wonderful crowd last year and hopefully we’ll get same support this year as well.
There are plenty of natural shades around the ground and Sri Lankan style food (koththu, fried rice, etc) and snacks will be available to purchase for a very reasonable price. We have also got a wonderful DJ to provide nonstop entertainment throughout the day.
All you need is to bring is yourself, family, friends, a picnic blanket or a picnic chair and we’ll provide the rest.
