The vibrant spirit of Sinhala and Tamil New Year filled the air at Waiora Scout Camp as the Dunedin Sri Lankan Society, in partnership with the Otago University Sri Lankan Students’ Association, hosted a memorable celebration on 28th April. The event was graced by Honorable Jules Radich, Mayor of Dunedin City Council, and commenced with a captivating traditional dance performance followed by the illuminating oil lamp lighting ceremony. Distinguished guests, including Lina Lastram from the Ministry for Ethnic Communities, along with a number of leaders representing various ethnic societies, added to the festive atmosphere. Attendees indulged in a culinary journey, savouring delectable Sri Lankan delicacies such as kiribath (milk rice) and kavum, among others, reminiscent of home. The festivities catered to all age groups, with children enthusiastically participating in traditional games like tug-of-war, sack races, and pillow fighting, alongside adults. Families and university students alike seized the opportunity to bond and revel in the inclusive ambience. Organizers expressed their delight at the overwhelming turnout, acknowledging the event’s success in fostering unity among the Sri Lankan community and embracing cultural diversity. They extended heartfelt gratitude to the funders (Ministry for Ethnic Communities, Dunedin City Council), sponsors (Otago University Sri Lankan Students Association, Araksha Insurance, Greshan Pitigala), and all participants whose contributions made the celebration a resounding triumph.
