Where the Spirit of Cricket, Music, and Sri Lankan Community Converge at Waikaraka Park
As excitement permeates the air, cricket enthusiasts eagerly await the unveiling of the fourth edition of the A-Plan Festival of Cricket on January 28th at the picturesque Waikaraka Park in Onehunga. Offering a unique and invaluable opportunity for Sri Lankan school alumni residing in New Zealand, this annual extravaganza has transformed into a cherished gathering where the genuine spirit of cricket, the enchantment of music, and a profound sense of unity seamlessly come to life.
In its fourth year, the festival boasts participation from 32 schools, with 24 teams competing for cricket supremacy. Rahula College, Matara, the reigning champions, face stiff competition as they aim to defend their title. Adding a new dimension to the event, organisers have introduced a music extravaganza for the first time, promising an enhanced entertainment experience.
A-Plan, the main sponsor, plays a pivotal role in elevating the tournament’s stature, joined by several other sponsors contributing to the event’s success. Beyond cricket, the festival is designed to be family-friendly, with free entrance for children under 14 and student discounts promoting youth involvement in the sport.
The festival promises a diverse experience beyond cricketing and musical action. Attendees can enjoy a dedicated kids’ play area, Sri Lankan food and retail stalls, and a liquor tent. Retail shops, sponsors’ tents with gifts, and a variety of Sri Lankan drinks further add to the festive atmosphere.
The organising committee aims to create a day filled with joy and entertainment, transcending the boundaries of a typical sporting event. A-Plan and other generous sponsors ensure that this edition offers captivating cricket, lively music, and family-centric enjoyment.
Dinesh Gamage, Lahiru Perera, and Kaizer are set to grace the stage as the featured artists, with Manuranga Wijayasekara as the compere. The band “Tantra” from Australia will provide musical vibes, while Lahiru Mudalige’s participation is yet to be confirmed. The chief guest, Anu Thoradeniya, adds to the star-studded line-up.
