DSLS held its 5th Annual General Meeting (AGM) on 7 June 2026 at the Sargood Centre, followed by a dinner for members. The meeting marked another milestone for the Society, with members unanimously electing a highly experienced committee to lead the organisation into its next phase of development.

The DSLS was established at its inaugural AGM in January 2023 under the leadership of Founder President Mr. Randima Senarathna, supported by Co-Secretaries Mr. Kasun Gayathra and Dr. Suranga Dassanayake, Treasurer Dr. Duminda Kuruppuarachchi and the executive committee.

At the second AGM on 25 June 2023, Mr. Susil Rupasinghe was elected President. Over three consecutive terms, he played a key role in strengthening the Society and establishing it as a respected organisation within Dunedin’s Sri Lankan community. His leadership, supported by Secretary Mr. Kasun Gayathra, Treasurer Dr. Duminda Kuruppuarachchi, and a committed committee, provided continuity and stability throughout the Society’s formative years.

With the Society now well established, members elected a new leadership team while acknowledging the significant contribution of the outgoing executive. On the recommendation of the Society’s patrons, Mr. Rupasinghe will continue to serve as an Advisor to support a smooth leadership transition.

The new President, Dr. Suranga Dassanayake, is a founding member who previously served as Co-Secretary and later as Vice President for two consecutive terms. Dr. Kavinda Wijenayake, who has served as Assistant Secretary for the past two years, was elected Secretary.

Speaking after his election, Dr. Dassanayake expressed confidence in the new committee.

“I am honoured to lead a high-calibre team comprising academics and experienced professionals from a range of industries. Thanks to the dedication of the outgoing executive, the Society is now in a strong position, providing an excellent foundation for future growth.”

While continuing its successful promotion of Sri Lankan culture, the new committee plans to broaden the Society’s community services. Priority initiatives include promoting the health and wellbeing of Sri Lankan migrants and expanding educational support for children, particularly through volunteer-led guidance for students preparing for the National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA).

Dr. Dassanayake said detailed proposals for these programmes are being developed and are expected to be implemented during the committee’s term.

The newly elected committee reflects the Society’s commitment to strengthening support for Sri Lankan families in Dunedin while fostering cultural, educational and community connections for future generations.
