Sri Lanka is fast becoming popular as a wedding destination. If you are based in a foreign country and planning a wedding in Sri Lanka, I would like to share a few tips from my personal experience as a Makeup Artist.
Primarily it’s important to plan on what attire you intend to wear. When choosing a saree it is important to choose a saree which is light as the duration from the time of dressing to the end of the function may be very long.
If it’s a Kandyan attire, I recommend that you choose a lesser worked saree as it will highlight the Kandyan jewelry and also will bring more focus on the beauty of the bride. There is a choice between traditional and modern Kandyan. I believe that the modern Kandyan has more options with hair styles than the traditional.
If it’s Indian, I recommend a saree that can be draped well, and for this reason it’s important to consider the material of the saree.
Next very important factor is the make-up. My style of make-up is to highlight a bride’s features without changing the natural look. Sri Lanka has very high humidity levels and thus it is important that the make-up last for the whole duration of the function. Therefore the quality and brands of the make-up products are important.
If you are prone to acne, pigmentation and scars it is recommended to seek medical help as far as six months before and stick to proper skin care routine, so that your skin will look its best on the wedding day.
As for hair, the softer hair styles are in vogue now, but it’s always better to talk to the make-up artist and decide on what suits you best at the trial stage.
The current trend on bouquets is to carry a lighter bouquet as its practical since it has to be carried throughout the function.
It is fundamentally important to book the venue, make-up artist and the photographer early. This is especially due to nakath (auspicious) days when the person of your choice might not be available.
It is also recommended and practical for brides living abroad to get the services of a wedding planner as most brides only travel to Sri Lanka at the last moment.
