Commitment Plus Patriotism: The Force Behind Success.

Serandib Supermarket started its journey in 2009 with a mission to provide the Sri Lankan community with good quality day-to-day needs and good Ceylon Tea. Ceylon Tea surpasses any contender in the world with its rich flavour. Authentic Sri Lankan cinnamon, pepper, cardamom or cloves taste that no spice from any other land does not match. The smell is mesmerising.

Today, operated as the ‘Serandib New Zealand Limited’, they follow the same mission with more commitments as the Front-Runners of the Supply of Quality Sri Lankan products to all communities in New Zealand.

‘The products are not sourced from the open market but purchased selectively from the branded producers,’ says Colin, the Serandib New Zealand Managing Director, based in Auckland. ‘We do not stick only to a few traditional suppliers. Instead, we are constantly on the lookout for the best and highest quality products,’ he adds.

Serandib pioneered in introducing a variety of quality brands and new products to the New Zealand market. To name a few, AMK, Derana, McCurry, Rabeena, Husma Traditional Rice, Ma’s Food, Royal Cashew, Wijaya Spices, Ranscrip Chips, Cynco Dehydrated Coconut, Renuka Coconut Products, E’Conutreena Organic Coconut products, Bogawanthalawa Tea, Euro Asia Export quality Tea, Re-launch of Premium Quality Mlesna Tea, Maliban Biscuit Limited, Munchee (Ceylon Biscuit Limited), and Harischandra Producers are among those suppliers. Serandib is the exclusive distributor for all these products in New Zealand. The supply chain covers all major cities from Up north to Invercargill through its logistic and distribution operation monitored from the spacious warehouse in Auckland.

Also, they launched the first-ever Sri Lankan e-commerce website for Sri Lankan food products in New Zealand in 2011. ‘The response is terrific. Customers can reach us from all over the country in both islands.’ Colin says. ‘One way we contribute to the Sri Lankan export economy,’ says Colin, the ex-corporate banker and one time New Zealand financial and business executive in major corporate entities, with his economic instinct plus the love for his beautiful motherland, ‘Serendib’.

‘Then, in New Zealand, we are privileged to work for many satisfied customers in all the communities. We always listen to their feedback.’ He adds. We have managed to retain food grade “A” in the Auckland Council Food Safety programme consistently since 2009  with 100% scores and the  ‘Excellent’ rating in ‘Eat Safe’ with 100% of expected standards. We are proud of our achievements and committed to our primary mission focusing on the needs of our customers by offering the best quality product range. We look forward to continuing to serve them. It’s a pleasure to work for them.

‘It has been a success story with a hard journey.’ So says Colin, with his decades-long experience in behind the scene operation, to support his wife Ramya, who is the key figure of the operation since its inception.  ‘The trust, the customers place in us, is an encouragement. The commitment of my family members and the devoted staff plays a huge role,’ Colin smiles with appreciation.
